A Little More About Me
I've spent a lot of time in Iowa. I grew up in Iowa, attended The University of Iowa as an undergraduate and returned for graduate school. I love Iowa, but I also love the opportunities and experiences that I have had away from the state. My first substantial out-of-Iowa experience came during my junior year as an undergraduate in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. In addition to experiencing a great school year that introduced me to many new mathematical ideas (I was lucky enough to meet Paul Erdös), I was also fortunate to be able to spend a good part of the year traveling around Europe. The experience introduced me to a multitude of new perspectives that continue to influence my micro and macro worldviews. Additionally, the forced self-reliance that I developed while traveling continues to give me confidence as I look forward to future adventures in my life.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I was interested in continuing my mathematics education but also attracted to the mysteries of the "real world." Subsequently, I entered the suit-and-tie workforce at a mutual fund company in Boston where I enjoyed my new lifestyle for a while, but soon found that I missed the constant stimulation provided in an academic setting. Four years later, while working as an analyst at a private wealth management firm, I got the opportunity to return to school. My master’s degree in mathematical finance from Boston University provided confirmation that academics – mathematics, in particular – is “what I want to do when I grow up.” Soon after receiving my degree, I applied for graduate school.

While in Boston, I met my wife Jill (a native New Yorker) and convinced her to return to Iowa with me. We have a young son, Max, who provides us with constant entertainment as well as a great excuse for my seemingly chronic tiredness. In my free time, (I vaguely remember having this at one point), I enjoy running, playing soccer (not realistic), watching soccer (more realistic), cooking and cheering for the Hawks.
