There are over 50 cities in the world which are linked to Beijing via
international air routes. See the ICM 2002
Transportation web page for a list of airlines which has services
to Beijing. Air travel from Beijing to Xi'an takes about 40 minutes.
The total cost for a round trip ticket from Chicago to
Xi'an is about $1100 to $1300, and is about $1000 from Los Angelas.
In the US, United Airline and Northwest, as well as several other
foreign airlines, have services to China. Here is the airport name
and airport code for Xi'an.
Airport name: XIANYANG
Airport code: XIY.
The following are some of the Chinese travel agents in Chicago and
Los Angelas, who might know more about travel to China, and might be
able to provide lower airfare or better connection to Xi'an. You may
want to compare them with other sources before purchasing the ticket.

Please note that travel to Beijing in August may be very hot,
especially because of the ICM2002. If you have made a decision to go
to the conference, you may want to purchase the air ticket in March or
April, or soon after that.
It is likely that we will be able to provide transportation from the
airport to your hotel, if you arrive Xi'an on August 11, the day
before the conference.
The following are the schedules of Air China on the days before and after
the conference. There are other airlines serving Beijing-Xi'an, but
it may be difficult buying their tickets from abroad.
