Topic:
From Pure Math to Ed-Tech AI: My Path from Academia to Industry

Abstract:
This will be an informal talk in which I discuss my transition from an academic career path to an industry career in the domain of machine learning. After a brief presentation of my work, I’ll open the floor to questions for anybody to ask about transitioning into an industry career involving machine learning and/or data science.

Bio:
Dr. Jesse Hamer received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 2018. He studied contact topology and braid theory under Dr. Keiko Kawamuro. Since August 2020, Jesse has worked as an Applied Scientist for the ed-tech company FineTune Learning, where he uses machine learning, specifically natural language processing (NLP), to develop products to assist with assessment and content tagging.
