Topic:
Lower Bounds on Volumes of Link Complements in 3-manifolds

This week, we will have a really interesting talk from knot theory! We will have milk and cookies! Remember to bring your own mugs.

An important problem in Knot Theory is to determine the geometry of a link complement directly from link diagrams, and to estimate geometric invariants such as volume and the lengths of geodesics in terms of basic diagrammatic invariants. However, obtaining relatively accurate lower bounds on volume has been difficult. One powerful method of estimating the volume of a Haken hyperbolic 3-manifold was developed by Agol, Storm and Thurston. In this paper we use their results to obtain surprisingly accurate lower bounds on volumes of links by appropriately decomposing a link into a cycle of tangles and using their respective volume to estimate the volume of the link.
