GAUSS SEMINAR - Kevin Gerstle

Speaker:
Kevin Gerstle
Topic:
Gaussian Polynomials

Abstract: While many of us are familiar with the traditional binomial coefficients n choose k, it is less known that these coefficients have a q-analogue called the Gaussian binomial coefficients or Gaussian polynomials. These give us an interesting generalization of the familiar n choose k that have applications in many different areas of math. In this talk, we will define these Gaussian polynomials and discuss some areas in which these polynomials show up, including in partitions, the theory of Grassmanians, and my own research.
