Mathematics Colloquium

Speaker:
Professor Srivatsav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli, UCSD
Topic:
Free entropy theory and applications

Abstract:

Free entropy theory was created by Voiculescu as part of his program on free probability in the late 80's and early 90's. It was built to obtain structural results for von Neumann algebras. Recently, with work of Hayes in 2018, followed up with several recent works of Ben Hayes, David Jekel and myself in various collaborations, the study has blossomed into a mature level with various powerful applications to von Neumann algebra theory and structure of free group factors. I will survey these recent developments and describe various aspects of this theory.
