# Mathematics Colloquium - Hubert Bray

Speaker:

Hubert Bray, Duke University

Topic:

"The Intersection of Geometry and Physics"

**Abstract:** What happens if we change a plus sign to a minus sign in the Rule of Pythagoras? Answer: Special Relativity! In this talk for a general math audience, we'll explain how natural Einstein's ideas on relativity are, from a geometric point of view. We'll also describe how General Relativity results from the simple but deep idea that matter curves spacetime. We'll conclude with a high level discussion of new results at the intersection of geometry and physics.
