Representation Theory Seminar
We introduce the two main ingredients - exceptional and regular L-functions and Whittaker models associated to Bernstein-Zelevinsky's derivatives. Along the line of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro, these enable us to compute local symmetric square $L$-functions for principal series representations (not necessarily unramified). This plays a crucial role in establishing the agreement of analytic and arithmetic $L$-functions on $GL(2)$.
