# Topology Seminar

Speaker:

Douglas Lafountain (Western Illinois)

Topic:

"Open book foliations and the transverse Markov theorem"

**Abstract:**

For closed oriented 3-manifolds with a contact structure supported by an open book decomposition, the transverse Markov theorem states that any two transversely isotopic braids can be related by a sequence of braid isotopies, positive stabilizations and positive destabilizations in that open book. This theorem was first proved by Pavelescu. In this talk we will present a new proof for tight contact 3-manifolds which utilizes Ito-Kawamuro's theory of open book foliations.
