Travel Funding

There is no formalized application process for travel funding from the Department of Mathematics for the 2012-2013 school year.  Graduate students seeking funding for conference travel should apply directly to the conference for support.  Graduate students should also be aware of several UI funding sources for graduate student travel (see list below).  Some graduate students may be eligible for travel funding from the Math Department in special cases; to find out if you are eligible please speak to the Department Chair or to your faculty advisor.

All graduate students can apply for limited travel funds from the Department. The travel request form is available in Word format or in PDF format.

Campus Travel Funding Opportunities for Math/AMCS Graduate Students

Graduate Student Senate (GSS)

The GSS has competitive travel grants of between \$200-\$400 for grad students who are presenting at a scholarly conference or who must travel to do research to complete a graduate project.  These funds are awarded in the form of a fellowship (which is taxable) from the Graduate College.  Take note of the application cycle schedule!

For more information, see Travel Funding

Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students (ECGPS)

The ECGPS grants travel funding to graduate and professional students presenting at a scholarly conference, to participate in a workshop or professional experience not available at the University of Iowa, or to do research.  These funds come from the Student Activities Fund (which is separate from the Graduate College funds).  You must apply for these via OrgSync.  Applications are reviewed by ECGPS officers (an organization which is analogous to the undergraduate UI Student Government/UISG and represents students from not only the Graduate College, but also the College of Law, the College of Dentistry, etc.).

International Programs (IP)

International Programs no longer offers funding for graduate student conference travel.  IP does offer Stanley Grants for International Research to students who submit successful research proposals.  The application for these awards in 2012 is due February 7, 2013.  The IP staff also assists with a variety of external international travel funding.

Division of Sponsored Programs/Office of External Funding for Research

Travel as part of a large research project or collaboration might qualify for a variety of external grants and funding programs, both publicly and privately funded.  Navigating and applying for these funds can be tricky.  DSP has two dedicated graduate assistants that will help graduate students learn how to search for appropriate funding opportunities.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)

Toward the beginning of each semester, WISE accepts applications for female doctoral students in STEM disciplines to apply for one of three $300 Dr. Eunice Beam travel grants to give an oral presentation about their research at a scholarly conference.
