Introduction

Sonia Kovalevsky was a Russian mathematician who made noteworthy contributions to math in the areas of analysis, partial differential equations, and mechanics, for which she won the Prix Bordin award. She was also a renowned writer and advocate for womens rights in the 19th century. She was the first major Russian female mathematician, the first woman member of the Russian Academy of Sciences where she worked as an editor, and the first modern European woman to attain full professorship.

Although society at that time did not allow women to succeed in academia, Kovalevsky had positive mentors in her life that supported her pursuit of a career in mathematics.

In her honor, the University of Iowa Mathematics Department organizes an annual Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics Day. High-school-aged women, along with their teachers and parents or guardians are invited to a day-long program featuring workshops, interactive talks, panels of professionals with math-related jobs and fun math games. The goal of SK Day is to stimulate young women's interest in mathematics, and encourage them to pursue a career in math and science. We hope to inspire young women by providing female role models in math and science elds, and educating them about potential career options.

Sonia Kovalevsky Day is an opportunity to engage your female students in a day of networking, mentoring, and fun! There is no cost to attend the event, and there are opportunities to win prizes, and meet and dine with university professors and students.

Note for parents and teacher participants: Parents and teachers are encouraged to accompany their students to this event and attend the special parent/teacher sessions. At the University of Iowa we believe that success in the classroom comes from interactive work between students and teachers. We hope this day will inspire more positive cooperation among these young women and the mentors available to them at their schools.
