Scholarships

The Helen Eckenfelder Scholarship ia awarded to a new student in math with an outstanding record based on performance in math courses and ACT score.

The Robert H. Oehmke Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from an underrepresented group in mathematics.

Dale T. Peer Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate Mathematics majors who plan to teach mathematics at the secondary or college level, with preference given to those planning to teach at the secondary level. These scholarships are made possible by a generous gift from the Ella W. Peer estate. The Department of Mathematics will award several Dale T. Peer Scholarships. Applications should include an unofficial transcript, at least one letter of recommendation from a University of Iowa Department of Mathematics faculty member, and a one page essay which includes your plans for teaching mathematics. Materials should be sent to the Department of Mathematics, 14 MLH. The deadlines for these applications will be announced to all math majors during the appropriate semesters.

The scholarships above are in addition to scholarships offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Awards

The Lowden Prize in Mathematics is awarded to a top graduating senior mathematics major.

The I. Joel and Bernice Jacobson Pasternak Prize is awarded to a female undergraduate math major who is a sophomore, junior, or senior, and who has excelled in math studies and plans to go onto graduate school, at some point in the future, with a focus on mathematics. Seniors who are in their last semester before their graduation are not eligible for this prize.

You are strongly encouraged to apply for the Prize if you are eligible.  Application materials for the Prize consist of: (1) a short essay, including the graduate school plans; (2) a transcript including the current GPA (unofficial copy of transcript is acceptable); (3) letters of recommendation from two faculty members, at least one from math faculty (UI faculty can e-mail yangbo-ye@uiowa.edu). Honors

The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization in the United States. The Alpha of Iowa chapter was chartered at the University of Iowa’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1895. Students are invited to join by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
