Graduate assistantships

Teaching and research assistantships are available to qualified applicants. 

Teaching assistantships are usually in the Department of Mathematics and involve tutoring in the Mathematics Laboratory, grading homework and quizzes, teaching discussion sections for lecture courses, teaching sections of precalculus and calculus courses, and teaching discussion sections of advanced courses. These teaching experiences are valuable training and improve the student's communications skills. Some students conduct research on projects with faculty members through research assistantships.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the teaching and research assistantships pay about $20,328 for 20 hours of work per week. Graduate students with assistantships receive tuition scholarships covering full-time tuition (based on greater than 9 semester hours per semester).

Outstanding applicants are nominated to the Graduate College for Graduate College Iowa Fellowships which provides a stipend supplement at $5,000 per year for up to five years and fellowship support for up to four summer terms at $5,000 per summer. Summer teaching, research assistantships, and fellowships are also available.

Most financial support starts in the fall semester, which begins in late August. Financial support is sometimes available starting in the spring semester, which begins in mid-January.

For full consideration, applications for fall semester admission should be completed by Jan. 15. Financial support is offered to the most qualified applicants during February, March, and April. Most students admitted to the program are offered financial aid. Financial aid is renewed each year for those students who make good progress toward their degree.
